White House Press Secretary Karoline is stepping down at the end of August, President Trump has now announced.

At 28, she was the youngest press secretary in history and one of only eight women to hold the post.

In a social media statement, she said she could not give the job the time it demands while also being "the best mom" to her two young children, having just returned from maternity leave following the birth of her second daughter in May.

Trump said he understood her decision and that she would remain one of his top outside advisers, helping the party in the midterm elections. No successor has been named.

A former press secretary who know the job well, opines.

There is no official choice, but the same names keep surfacing across outlets. Here's who's in the mix:

  • Anna Kelly — principal deputy press secretary, called the "natural successor" by several outlets; already a Fox surrogate
  • Steven Cheung — communications director, close Trump ally
  • Taylor Budowich — former deputy chief of staff for communications
  • Alina Habba — Trump's former personal lawyer, a frontrunner per multiple sources; briefly served as acting US Attorney for NJ
  • Scott Jennings — CNN commentator and longtime GOP operative, named as a frontrunner by some reports
  • Matthew Boyle — Breitbart's Washington bureau chief
  • Katie Miller — former DOGE aide, married to Stephen Miller; previously press secretary to VP Pence
  • Kari Lake, Lara Trump, Tricia McLaughlin, Elizabeth Pipko... etc.
