He was born this week on August 12, 1911. Hi name was Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes, the man the world eventually learned to love as Cantinflas.
Then one day he ran away and joined a carpa travelling company where he learned to sing, dance, acrobat, prize fight and clown. He sent money to his family but didn't want them to know what he was doing, so created the name Cantinflas for himself which translates from Spanish as a noun meaning 'lovable clown' and as a verb 'to talk too much but say little'
Mexico gave birth to one of the world's most lovable and accomplished comedians, a figure as beloved across Latin America and Spain as Charlie Chaplin was everywhere else. Chaplin himself said as much. Cantinflas was so singular a talent that Spanish absorbed him into its own vocabulary to "cantinflear" is to talk in circles, to say a great deal while meaning very little, a linguistic monument most performers only dream of.
I met him in Manhattan, sometime around 1984, when I was a field producer for NBC News. The occasion was a recording: Dedicado a los Niños del Mundo. Dedicated to the Children of the World. That record was the reason I was in the room at all, Cantinflas was doing a rare U.S. media push, sharing a bill with Menudo, the biggest Latin teen sensation on the planet at that moment. Two very different generations of Latin American stardom, colliding for one afternoon over a children's record.
What struck me most wasn't the fame. It was the man. Cantinflas was a gentle giant of Spanish-language celebrity. He was warm, totally friendly, entirely approachable. No entourage, no distance. His dedication to children around the world wasn't a publicist's talking point; you could feel it was real, sitting across from him. For a performer who'd spent five decades as the pelado, the lovable underdog every working-class Mexican saw something of themselves in, that warmth wasn't a character. It was just who he was.

Un día se escapó de casa y se unió a una carpa itinerante, donde aprendió a cantar, bailar, hacer acrobacias, boxear y payasear. Le mandaba dinero a su familia, pero no quería que supieran a qué se dedicaba, así que se inventó el nombre Cantinflas, que en español funciona como sustantivo,"payaso entrañable", y como verbo: "hablar mucho y decir poco".
México le dio al mundo uno de sus comediantes más queridos y talentosos, una figura tan amada en toda Latinoamérica y España como lo fue Charlie Chaplin en el resto del planeta. El propio Chaplin lo dijo así. Cantinflas fue un talento tan singular que el español lo incorporó a su propio vocabulario: "cantinflear" es hablar en círculos, decir mucho sin decir nada, un monumento lingüístico con el que la mayoría de los artistas solo pueden soñar.

Lo que más me impactó no fue la fama. Fue el hombre. Cantinflas era un gigante amable de la fama en español. Cálido, totalmente amistoso, completamente accesible. Sin séquito, sin distancia. Su entrega a los niños del mundo no era una línea de relaciones públicas; se sentía real, sentado frente a él. Para un artista que había pasado cinco décadas siendo "el pelado", el entrañable desvalido en quien todo mexicano de clase trabajadora veía algo de sí mismo, esa calidez no era un personaje. Era, sencillamente, quien era.
He entrevistado a muchos personajes noticiosos. A los buenos, los malos y los feos. Muy pocos me dejaron una sensación como esa.
