Labor Day: A Multilingual Journalism Career Built One Newsroom at a Time
Labor Day has always held a special meaning for me. It is a reminder that careers are built through work, persistence, opportunity true grit and, a willingness to take a chance on something that has never been done before.
It took 10 years after I graduated from high school for me to reach NBC News. Along the way came college, a student internship with The Washington Post/Newsweek organization under my longtime mentor, Doctor Ken and few years as a South Florida news reporter. Each job became another step toward the next newsroom, another lesson in journalism and another opportunity to learn from people who were already doing the work at the highest levels.
NBC News opened the door to an entirely new chapter. From there came executive leadership positions with Univision and Telemundo, followed by an extraordinary opportunity to help launch the U.S. Information Agency's television news operation.
And then there was News 12 The Bronx. The news director and station manager posts are reminders of another important Labor Day milestone: building a newsroom from the ground up. Cablevision announced plans to launch the first 24-hour local news channel dedicated exclusively to the Bronx, with me serving as News Director and overseeing its operations.
That experience reinforced something I have believed throughout my career: journalism is ultimately about people doing difficult work in service to other people. Technology changes. Platforms change. Business models change. But the responsibility to inform communities remains.
Eventually, The Associated Press recruited me to become New York Bureau Chief of Associated Press Television News (APTN).
The record documents that progression. A 1999 APTN announcement says I had previously served as News Director of News 12, and before that as an executive producer at Univision, news director at Telemundo and a news editor and producer at NBC News, where I worked on Today, Sunrise, NBC Nightly News and NBC News Overnight.
From my first days learning the craft to NBC, Univision, Telemundo, USIA, News 12 and APTN, the path was never a straight line. It was a working journalist's education, one assignment, newsroom and opportunity at a time.
This Labor Day, I am grateful for the work, the people who opened doors, the colleagues who shared the journey and the communities we had the privilege to serve.
Ten years from high school to NBC. A lifetime of building newsrooms and directing staffers since.
