I am not a registered Democrat or Republican, but the top GOP American public servants nonetheless recruited me.
They eventually became the greatest Republican Party tag team in the history of American politics to be elected one after the other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HOssNbtsds&list=RD6HOssNbtsds&start_radio=1
A few years later, these two joined forces and then eventually offered me a G15/10 News Division Chief post to run the USIA-VOA Spanish-language content for Marti Media. https://youtu.be/TpJmozEzd-I?si=5SNKA1p1HDKMZJuc
The "greatest Republican Party tag team" was elected consecutively - Ron serving 1981-1989, George 1989-1993, followed by a significant role in U.S. international broadcasting directed at Spanish-speaking audiences, particularly Cuba.
My USIA/VOA and Radio-TV Martí work represented an interesting intersection of public diplomacy, Cold War strategy, and engagement with immigrant communities, particularly Cuban Americans who fled Castro's regime. This connects back to my earlier point about politicians "reaching out to immigrants and reaping the benefits."
The Cuban-American community in South Florida became a crucial Republican constituency during this era, and Radio-TV Martí served dual purposes: projecting American values to Cuba while also signaling to Cuban Americans that their concerns about Castro's regime were taken seriously at the highest levels of government.
USIA was devoted to propaganda, while it is technically accurate, but carries weight, it's the frank terminology. "Public diplomacy or international broadcasting are the preferred euphemisms, but the core mission was influencing foreign perceptions in America's favor.
Are we going backwards?
