COSMETICOREXIA

There is a dangerous difference between a healthy interest in skincare or becoming obsessive with plastic surgery.

Cosmeticorexia, or dermorexia describes an excessive focus on achieving flawless skin through skincare products, treatments and beauty routines. While the condition is not recognized as an official mental health diagnosis, experts have raised concerns about its potential physical and psychological effects.

Supporters of intensive skincare routines say they can improve skin health, increase confidence and encourage self-care. People who closely follow skincare trends may also develop a better understanding of ingredients and skin maintenance.

Critics, however, warn that excessive skincare practices can lead to skin irritation, damage to the skin barrier and allergic reactions. The behavior also may contribute to anxiety, compulsive purchasing, social comparison and an unhealthy preoccupation with perceived flaws. In severe cases, cosmeticorexia may overlap with conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Experts generally distinguish between healthy skincare habits and obsessive behavior. While regular skincare can be beneficial, cosmeticorexia is typically viewed as a harmful pattern because the risks often outweigh the perceived benefits.
