With the Nov. 3 midterm elections just over two months away, this is the one election officials and voting-rights groups are urging Americans to check their registration status now, before state deadlines start to close.
All 435 U.S. House seats, 33 Senate seats, and numerous governorships and state legislative races are on the ballot this fall. Voting begins well before Election Day in most states: absentee ballots start going out in early September, and in-person early voting typically runs from mid-October through the end of the month.
Registration deadlines vary by state, and missing one can mean missing the chance to vote at all. Most states close registration between Oct. 4 and Oct. 26. Twenty-two states plus Washington, D.C. — including the battlegrounds of Michigan, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Nevada — allow same-day registration at the polls. North Dakota has no registration requirement.
Key ways to register or check your status:
— Vote.gov, the federal government's official registration portal, lets residents of any state check registration status or start the process.
— Vote.org offers similar tools, along with reminders and ballot-tracking features.
— Most states also allow registration directly through their secretary of state or state election board website.
Voters who have moved, changed their name, or haven't cast a ballot in several recent elections are encouraged to confirm their registration is current, since address changes in particular can otherwise invalidate a registration or send voters to the wrong polling place.
National Voter Registration Day falls on Sept. 22 this year, a nonpartisan civic holiday marked by voter drives in all 50 states aimed at reaching first-time registrants and those who have lapsed.
Election officials note that registration itself is nonpartisan — it does not commit a voter to any party, candidate or position — and stress that verifying registration status takes most people only a few minutes
