FAKE NEWS HORMUZ?

Submitted by ub on

Strait of Hormuz is not "fake news," but rather a complex, evolving situation with conflicting reports. While Iran's new leader has suggested keeping it closed as a pressure tactic, Iran's UN envoy has stated they will not close it. Shipping has, however, effectively come to a standstill due to security fears.

  • Conflicting Reports: While Mojtaba Khamenei reportedly said the strait should remain closed, Iran's UN ambassador stated that Tehran will not close it.
  • Effectively Closed: Despite the lack of an official, total closure, the threat of attacks by Iran has led to a major disruption in shipping, which has been described as an "effective" shutdown.
  • Military Tension: The U.S. has threatened to escort ships, with some, like {Link: a DOE spokesperson https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/10/oil-hormuz-iran-tanker-wright-00821041}, initially claiming a successful escort—a claim that was later denied by the White House.
  • Impact: A prolonged, complete closure would significantly spike global energy costs, with over 20% of the world's oil passing through the waterway. A full or near full closure lasting a month or more would push crude oil prices well into triple digits and European natural gas prices "toward or above the crisis levels.
