Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes Thursday as a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

The jury of his peers of seven men and five women delivered a guilty verdict.After Judge Juan Merchan charged the jury by giving them instructions on the law, alternate jurors are expected to be held separate from the main panel which considers the 34 criminal counts.
The attorneys for both sides will stay close to the courtroom if the jury sends a note during deliberations. Journalists will remain in overflow courtrooms on verdict watch.
Six weeks into the trial, this will be the first Wednesday that the jury will work as the usual trial schedule cleared all Wednesdays for the judge’s other docket matters.
