In biological science, decomposition is defined as the process in which a living or organic substance is broken down into simpler organic or inorganic matter. This process can be differentiated into two different types of decomposition including abiotic, or the breaking down of substances by chemical or physical processes, and biotic, or the breaking down of substances by metabolic processes. Metabolic processes are processes that take place within or due to the metabolism, the process that changes food into other useful products of living organisms, such as energy.
