In Germany on September 30, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Neville Chamberlain, and Edouard Daladier put their names to an agreement that redrew the map of Central Europe without a Czech signature in the room. The terms required Czechoslovakia to hand the Sudetenland over to Germany.
Chamberlain returned to London convinced the concession had bought peace. Crowds cheered the scrap of paper he carried. Within months the rest of Czechoslovakia would fall, and the wider war the negotiators hoped to avoid would arrive anyway. The conference stands as a study in what great powers will trade when they believe the alternative is worse.
The borders shifted on a signature. The people living inside those borders had no vote in the room.
