James Earl Carter Jr. aka Jimmy is an American retired politician who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977-81.

On this President's Day, there is sad news that former President Jimmy Carter is now in hospice care. I remember meeting him in college in Florida when he was still a long-shot presidential candidate. Later as a young reporter, I covered him as President and during his visit to Walt Disney World,

I must admit I came away a fan. In a long journalism career, no other politician impressed me as much as Jimmy Carter. What a nice person Jimmy really was.  Carter passed my former boss, President George H.W. Bush to become the longest-living president. In the years since he left office. Carter has become perhaps the most accomplished former president in American history. teaching Sunday School in Georgia and building homes throughout the USA with Habitat for Humanity

The only U.S. president to attend the U.S. Naval Academy

Former professor at Emory University in Atlanta

Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize

Namesake of the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)

Co-winner of a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for the audio book of “Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis” with Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis

Won a second Grammy Award in the Best Spoken Word Album category for the audio book version of “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety”

Won a third Grammy Award in the Best Spoken Word Album category, this time for the audio book version of “Faith - A Journey For All”

Historians consider Jimmy Carter’s one-term presidency as less than stellar despite notable achievements such as the Camp David Accords, the Salt II Treaty with the former Soviet Union, and the Panama Canal Treaty. He didn’t get along well with the Washington establishment, especially the late Senator Teddy Kennedy, who I also met, but unsuccessfully tried to wrest the 1980 Democratic nomination away from an incumbent fellow Democrat. Unfortunately, Carter was politically injured by Stagflation, an energy crisis, the American Hostages in Iran, and other problems that cost him Re-election and USA voters' popular support.

Perhaps Jimmy Carter was too nice to be POTUS. He was intelligent but not tough enough to deal with the Washington establishment or the Ayatollah.

Undoubtedly Jimmy Carter’s post-presidency legacy will go down in history as the greatest of any ex-president of the USA..
