Joy is more than a feeling and it has been proven to increase beneficial and measurable effects on the body.
Laughter
Researchers at the University of Maryland found that laughter can expand blood vessels and improve blood flow, producing effects similar to moderate exercise. Other studies have also shown that laughter can reduce cortisol, a hormone associated with stress.
Hugging
In a study from Carnegie Mellon University, more than 400 adults were exposed to a common cold virus. People who received frequent hugs were less likely to become ill, and those who did get sick experienced milder symptoms. Supportive physical touch appears to help buffer the effects of stress on the immune system.
Singing
Research on group singing suggests it can boost certain immune markers and promote a sense of connection. A Swedish study also found that choir members' heart rates became synchronized as they sang together.
Dancing
A widely cited study published in The New England Journal of Medicine followed older adults and examined a variety of leisure activities. Frequent dancing was associated with the largest reduction in the risk of dementia among the activities studied. While this was an observational finding—not proof that dancing alone prevents dementia—it highlights the unique combination of physical movement, mental engagement, and social interaction that dancing provides.
Joy may not be a pharmaceutical medicine in the literal sense, but many joyful activities are linked to real physical and mental health benefits. So laugh often, hug the people you care about when welcome, sing loudly, dance freely, and make room for joy in your life. It's good for the heart, the mind, and the people around the world.
Bailar
Un estudio publicado en The New England Journal of Medicine siguió a adultos mayores y analizó diversas actividades recreativas.
