LASTING LABOR LOWS

Submitted by ub on

As the world shuns Communism, Fascism. Sexism, Socialism, and the final biggest and last acceptable 'ism,' left is now Agism.

Worldwide workers over the age of 50 are unemployed for several times as long as their younger counterparts because of roadblocks when it comes to finding work. Also, older workers typically have to try from three to ten times harder to land a job.

Older folks have much to offer they know it and everyone as well as everyone else it, so why are there few good opportunities for us to contribute to a vibrant job market?

Many online Job descriptions often use phrases like "digital native" and "tech savvy" that can make it seem like older workers need not apply, per an Indeed analysis. And job applications often ask for a birth date or graduation year, sparking fears among older applicants that they'll be screened out.

Most younger workers don't understand the meaning of customer service or just don't seem to care. We learned this firsthand while traveling from one bank, where we made a substantial deposit. In the middle of the process, we had to CHASE him down because he said he needed to take a break and left to purchase a power drink. Then pharmacists gave opposite information about prescribed medication, then texted "We have your back" Later at the local food market, our so-called management our do nothing condo board, and so on... Are you getting the message?

Most senior applicants are receiving emails like this one... Our review of submissions is now complete, and a select group of candidates has been chosen to proceed with the evaluation process for this position. Unfortunately, your application was not among those selected. However, please note that you were part of an exceptionally strong pool of applicants, and the task of selecting candidates whose qualifications and experience closely aligned with the current needs was challenging... BLAH, Blah, blah...etc.

In America, there are exceptions and deep disparities. Take Republican Mitch McConnell, please... For the second time in about a month, the gears and winches that power what remains of his brain seized up during an impromptu news conference. While taking questions, and asked about running for reelection in 2026, the top GOP Senator powered down as if an unseen hand had removed the lithium-ion battery from his chassis. That paralleled a previous Capitol Hill incident at a late July presser when his communications skills collapsed, forcing him to abandon the podium.

If this guy were a bus driver, a broadcaster, or a teacher engaged in any other occupation that, like serving as a legislative leader, demands real-time responses, he would have been benched pending a medical examination.

One in four of America's workers is 55 or older. But age discrimination persists in offices, keeping many of those people out of jobs.

Why it matters: Older workers face extended periods of unemployment, stressful job hunts, and mounting financial stress and employers are missing out on an entire generation of life experience.
