Salute to Latino vets.
Since the Revolutionary War, Latinas and Latinos have proudly fought in the U.S. Military, declaring their allegiance to the United States through their service. During both World Wars and the Korean War, Latinas and Latinos served in increasing numbers, breaking through racial and gender barriers. Many were decorated for their heroism. Approximately 80,000 Latinas and Latinos served in the Vietnam War. Like other Americans, many protested the war and connected their critique of it with the civil rights causes of the day. Recent generations of Latinas and Latinos have heroically served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Today, Latinas and Latinos are the fastest-growing minority population in the military and come from an array of Latin American origins. Half of Latina and Latino veterans have at least one immigrant parent, and approximately a third of veterans were born in Latin America. Committed to upholding U.S. democratic ideals on and off the battlefield, Latina and Latino service members continue to fight to protect the United States and sustain its everlasting pursuit of a more perfect union.
