LATINOS LOATHE GOP?

Since POTUS insists he’s on the ballot, the Republicans don’t have a chance with sleepy DON.

What a difference in public opinion preferences. President Trump's approval rating held at a record low in recent days, as many Hispanic voters panned his job performance and planned to spurn his Republican Party in November's midterm elections, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Hispanic voters helped propel Trump to victory in the 2024 presidential contest, when he won nearly half the Hispanic vote compared with roughly one-third in the 2020 election.

But support for the president has waned in recent months. Are they now saying hasta la vista, Viejito Dormido?

  • Control of the House or Senate decides who sets the agenda, runs investigations, and controls spending bills.
  • Executive orders can't be repealed by Congress directly. Congress can pass laws that override them or defund their implementation, but Trump can veto those, and overriding a veto takes two-thirds of both chambers. Courts are the other main check.
  • Removal would require impeachment by a House majority and conviction by two-thirds of the Senate, a very high bar.

So a Democratic win would mostly mean oversight and a brake on the agenda, not a quick fix. Republican voters see the same logic in reverse: holding Congress keeps the president's agenda moving.

On the polling. Midterms usually go against the president's party, and low approval adds to that. But polls aren't votes. Turnout, district lines, and who actually shows up matter a lot, and Hispanic voters are not a monolith. Those shifts also vary by region and issue.

People are weighing real tradeoffs on both sides: immigration, prices, executive power, and the economy. The strongest case for Democrats is as a check on executive power. The strongest case for Republicans is delivering on the agenda voters chose in 2024.
