LESSONS LEARNED?

What have our United States leaders learned from recorded history and passages of scripture?

A "Shining city on a hill" was a phrase, famously utilized by the Great Communicator, Republican President Ronald Reagan, to describe American exceptionalism as a beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunity.

Originating from John Winthrop’s 1630 Puritan sermon "A Model of Christian Charity", it derives from Jesus's "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5:14).

However, credibility once lost is hard to regain. Trust, once broken, is not easily restored is something Americans once took for granted: that the republic stood as a beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunity to the world.

If the U.S. continues down the current path, that vision will not merely mark a contentious chapter in domestic politics. It will be remembered as the moment America forfeited the moral authority that sustained its global influence, accelerating a relative decline that no amount of military or economic power can easily arrest.

Supporters argue that questioning alliances, withdrawing from international agreements, or challenging democratic norms can weaken the perception that the U.S. is a stable and reliable leader.

Critics may counter:

  • It weakened alliances and global confidence in U.S. commitments.

  • It undermined democracy
