Reacting to a reported shake-up at CBS News, there are a couple of things worth pointing out for an accurate picture.

CBS News topper Bari Weiss was best known for her work at The New York Times and as the founder of The Free Press. She may now be responsible CBS workforce demolition including TV news division, which are a real trend. Networks and station groups are consolidating under pressure as audiences shift away from traditional broadcast toward streaming and digital platforms.

  • investing more in digital/video-on-demand
  • restructuring newsrooms
  • cutting costs in legacy operations

All references to figures like Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow capture a broader sentiment: many people feel that modern broadcast news is far removed from its mid-20th-century “golden age.” That comparison comes up a lot when layoffs or editorial shifts happen.

How big the cuts could be

  • Multiple reports say layoffs could reach ~15% of staff, which is substantial.
  • There’s been Buyouts accepted by staffers (including “Evening News” employees) and Earlier rounds of layoffs in 2025 tied to corporate restructuring
  • A staff walkout/strike recently hit CBS’s streaming division amid contract disputes and layoff fears.
  • High-profile departures and resignations have followed, with concerns about editorial direction.
  • Ratings for flagship programs like the evening news have been under pressure, adding urgency to the overhaul.
