Edward A Caban sworn in as first-ever Latino NYPD commissioner. Bronx born 55-year-old Caban is leader of the largest in USA.
Caban was appointed in 2023 by Mayor Eric Adams. Caban previously served as First Deputy Police Commissioner under Keechant Sewell.
The police department he will lead is more diverse than the largely white and male police force he joined 32 years ago.
He earned the top cop spot after serving in several precincts across the city as he climbed the ranks from patrol officer to sergeant, lieutenant, captain, executive officer, commanding officer, deputy inspector, inspector and first deputy commissioner.
‘Meanwhile, The Legal Aid Society, a NYC social justice law firm is saying policing New York City is in “dire need of reform” and that Caban will need to make “significant inroads with the public to improve their trust in the department he’s about to lead.”
“This starts with acknowledging that law enforcement isn’t a panacea for many community issues and that initiatives like the evidence-based CURE Violence model must take precedence over the continued revamping of the racist and fraught policies and practices of yesteryear,” Legal Aid Society said in a statement.
