Humans tamed the wolf and called it a friend, the horse and called it labor, the river and called it progress. Every act of domestication in human history has carried the same two faces companionship on one side, value on the other. But we have never been fully honest about which face we're wearing at any given moment.
Now we've built something new to tame, and we can't decide what it is. Is AI a pet, something we've domesticated, something loyal, something that serves at our command and asks nothing back? Or is it a technical slave a thing we've built purely to extract labor from, no different in spirit from every machine before it, just faster and stranger?
The honest answer should be none of the above, and that's the part that should worry us. Does it worry you? A pet has needs we're obligated to meet. A slave, God please forgive the S word, was at least understood by the master to be doing something against its will. AI is neither dependent nor resistant. It has no needs to neglect and no will to violate. It simply does, at enormous scale, exactly what it was built to do, which means whatever gets damaged in the process isn't cruelty. It's indifference. And indifference, historically, has done more damage than malice ever has. Anyone with a heart and half a brain should admit.
No enough objections on behalf of the atmosphere for our renewable energy. Nobody sat down and decided nature was not the enemy. A system did precisely what it was optimized to do, and the relationship we never bothered to maintain on equal terms, the one with the planet that actually keeps us alive, took the loss quietly, the way it always has, until it no longer cant.
We call the dog man's best friend because the dog needed us to survive, and we, in turn, needed something in this world that asked for care rather than output. Nature was always the older, larger version of that same friendship, the one relationship we depended on completely and were never, ever the master of, no matter how the last centuries made it feel. We didn't tame nature. We just stopped noticing we hadn't.
AI is not the danger. It's the newest mirror. It will be exactly as loyal, exactly as extractive, and exactly as indifferent as the values we hand it, the same choice we've been making with every tool since the wheel. The question was never what AI is. It's what we're finally going to decide we are: caretakers, or just the latest species to mistake domestication for dominion... And so it goes.
