Some folks say it is OK to tell a small lie every day, but others point to the mental disorder of constant liars who’ve spread thousands.
Psychiatrists have recognized pathological lying as a mental affliction since the late 1800s, yet experts say it has never been given serious attention, funding, or real study. It doesn’t have its own diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, the bible of psychiatry. Instead, it is recognized as a feature of other diagnoses, like personality disorders. Can liars be considered members of a new religion?
Republican liars go far beyond George Santos Republicans’ Faustian bargain — accepting the lies in return for power — meant that truth, honesty, character, and integrity were no longer requirements for public service in the GOP. Plenty of them takes advantage of the new rules.
