Frankenstein hid in Berlin during the Holocaust, died at 100, according to a published Washington Post report.
Stripping himself of the Star of David that marked him as a Jew, he went underground with his family, living by his wits and in terror.
Many Jews who remained in Berlin concluded that they had no choice but to go into hiding. They rarely stayed in one place for long and called themselves “U-boats,” a reference to the German submarines that would dive down into the sea, rise to the surface, and then submerge again. Frankenstein and his family were soon among the “U-boats.”
