George Wendt, best known as Norm Peterson, everyone’s friend on the long-running sitcom "Cheers," died at 76.

Wendt earned six Emmy nominations for his role on the NBC comedy series. He was on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Wendt began his career in comedy at The Second City theater.

Prior to "Cheers," George starred in a few roles on television, including "M*A*S*H," "Taxi" and "Soap" before his big break in "Cheers."

George was also in the film, Christmas With the Campbells. He played the role of Robert. George Wendt had a huge fan base from his time as Norm on the TV hit, “Cheers.

The character Norm Peterson, played by George Wendt, drank "near beer" with a low alcohol content, typically 3%, according to Fox News and People.com. To make it appear frothy, a bit of salt was added. The show's cast has also confirmed that the beer was warm and flat.
