The Carters were married in 1946 at Maranatha Baptist Church, the congregation the couple helped start in Plains in the 1970s. The group members were reportedly divided because of segregation. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the wife of former Pres. Jimmy Carter a devoted advocate for mental health, died on Sunday, the Carter Center announced. She was 96.
"Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished," Jimmy Carter said in a statement. "She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."
