RIP WILLIE COLON

Submitted by ub on

William Anthony Colón Román was an American Salsa musician and social activist. He began his career as a trombonist but also sang, wrote, produced, and acted.

Colón was a pioneer of Salsa music and a best-selling artist in the genre, having been a key figure in the nascent New York City scene associated with Fania Records.

He is also noteworthy for having assumed the gangster image in his album covers before it was culturally popular. Since the 1980s, he has at times been deeply involved in the politics of New York City.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and renowned musician, Willie Colon. He passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by his loving family," a statement shared on his Facebook page reads.

"While we grieve his absence, we also rejoice in the timeless gift of his music and the cherished memories he created that will live on forever," the statement reads. "Our family is deeply grateful for your prayers and support during this time of mourning. We kindly ask for privacy as we navigate our grief."

One of his songs kept me focused and grounded while I dedicated several weeks covering the Civil War in Central America.
