DON vs RON

I have a friend and neighbor named after Reagan. His brother calls him Ronnie during the Reagan years. Do you know how many babies were named Ronald compared to babies named Donald during the Trump years?

Here’s comparing the eras of the two POTUS:

The Reagan years (1981–1988): Ronald was still a fairly common baby name, although it was already declining from its mid-20th-century peak. During those eight years, roughly 85,000–95,000 boys in the U.S. were named Ronald.

The Trump years (first term) (2017–2020): Donald had become a relatively rare baby name. Based on Social Security Administration data, about 2,000–2,300 boys were named Donald during those four years combined (roughly 500–600 per year).

So, despite both names belonging to presidents:

Ronald (Reagan era): ~90,000 babies over 8 years.

Donald (Trump's first term): ~2,200 babies over 4 years.

Even accounting for the different lengths of the presidencies, Ronald was given to roughly 20 times as many babies per year as Donald was during Trump's first term.

This difference wasn't caused solely by the presidents. The name Ronald had been a very popular boys' name since the 1940s and was still widely used in the 1980s, while Donald had been steadily declining in popularity since the 1930s, long before Donald Trump entered politics. Also there’s Donald Duck the original angry bird.
