SIN TU VISION

Without the late Andrew Jerrold Perenchio's amazing vision, there may never be the Spanish-language Television Network Univision.

We are all sinners whether we acknowledge this in public or not. Years ago one man's SIN revolutionized American entertainment.

In religion, sin is a transgression against divine law. Each culture has its own interpretation of what it means to commit a sin. While sins are generally considered actions, any thought, word, or act considered immoral, selfish, shameful, harmful, or alienating might be sinful.

In Spanish, the word SIN means without. Spanish International Network became the first TV station group. The idea to begin operating in the United States from its establishment in 1961 until its name changed to Univision and now TU, which means you or Televisa-Univision. Without You?

From its inception, and founded by late media mogul Jerry Perenchio back on September 30, 1962, in San Antonio, Texas television station KCOR-TV was the first Spanish-language broadcaster in the continental U.S. The station would become the operations center of the Spanish International Network and part of what is now Televisa/Univision.

A decade later Perenchio joined Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin in 1973 as partners at Tandem Productions. Perenchio's business acumen combined with the creative talents of Lear and Yorkin transformed it into the top TV company of its time, with hit shows that included:

Perenchio and Lear went on to form TAT Communications and launched:

There were a number of successful half-hour sitcoms and later the purchase of Embassy Pictures in 1982. He teamed up with Yorkin to produce the dystopian science fiction major motion picture thriller: BladeRunner  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPcZHjKJBnE

The film was directed by Ridley Scott starring Harrison Ford. Perenchio and Lear sold Embassy to The Coca-Cola Company in 1985, for Coca-Cola stock.

After the sale of Embassy Communications, in 1989 Perenchio went on to produce

Driving Miss Daisy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ3wXC5jqKE

The movie featured Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman and won four Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Picture.

In 2002, Perenchio produced Frida https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9jX0S7mvB8 with his wife Margaret Perenchio, https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1301631/ with award-winning actress Salma Hayek.

The phrase behind every great man is a great woman is a popular saying that folks use to give women credit when society has not recognized their achievements. It was also a slogan for the feminist movement and was used in the 1940s.

However, the first printed citation I could find of 'Behind every great man there's a great woman' is from the Texas newspaper The Port Arthur News, from February 1946. This was headed - "Meryll Frost - 'Most courageous athlete of 1945'":

"As he received his trophy, the plucky quarterback unfolded the story of how he 'came back'. He said 'They say behind every great man there's a woman. While I'm not a great man, there's a great woman behind me.'"

In my opinion, Perenchio's single most spectacular and successful enterprise was achieved when he then teamed up with my former boss and the late Mexican media Titan who was known as El Tigre / The Tiger Emilio Azcárraga Milmo by branding SIN to Univision television network. They recruited yours truly from NBC and I then became their youngest Television executive.

Over the years, Univision purchased 35 additional television stations, added Spanish radio stations, acquired Mexican record companies, and grew into one of the most successful multimedia companies in the world.

Univision evolved into the most popular Spanish-language broadcaster in the USA and the first non-English language television network to occasionally outperform American networks in the United States ratings. Perenchio sold Univision Communications in March 2007 to the Saban Capital Group. Televisia just bought Univision back.
