My daughter Natasha shared some amazing news that was music to my ears. She said my grandson is now a fan of The Beatles.
Once upon a time when Grandpa was much younger, there was the famous writing duo most people knew as Paul and John. John Lennon, the multi-instrumentalist and singer Paul McCartney made musical history as the most successful songwriting duet of all time.
The Beatles still are the best-selling band in history. The Fab Four have sold an estimated amount of more than 600 million records worldwide and are still a huge influence to countless musicians from all generations.
Ever since I learned that Parker who is still in grammar school enjoys listening to John, Paul, George, and Ringo, I have sent him, and his parents my favorite musical compositions from The Beatles.
However, since variety is the spice of life, I am now introducing him to a rock band that is American made just like he happens to be.
Rock and Roll music was born right here in the good old #USA, but in the 60s the bands from Great Britain helped the music genre to evolve. The British Invasion, led by The Beatles, gave the groups from the United Kingdom global popularity and inspired countless young musicians to form their bands, including Grandpa Bob to form many many bands.
One of them was The Rebels. We played for audiences at parties and once won the local Battle of Bands contest in New Jersey.
But one of the very best American professional bands recorded an album that is still considered a magical; musical masterpiece. The Beatles were so popular that only a few bands were their “rivals”. The Beach Boys were formed in 1961 one year after the British band, in Hawthorne, California, United States of America. Their creative leader Brian Wilson took the band’s sound further when they recorded the groundbreaking album “Pet Sounds” in 1966. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh_yhTyae08
Wilson reportedly said the group was influenced to record Pet Sounds after listening to The Beatles - Rubber Soul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfSQkZuIx84&list=PLg5pp7nrH0IqPGI0VUZ8T…
The Beach Boys were the inspiration for one of The Beatles' finest recordings in 1967 and the album is “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwwABrNLvFs&list=PLUbWhnfHu1fWSgdDC3hKh…
Many years later, while serving as Associated Press New York Bureau Chief, I received a special "Back Stage Pass and an invitation from my old friend Michael Jensen, the publicist to many celebrities. This was the tribute concert for Brian Wilson.
