SWINGING SOIREE

My late pal DJ Murray Kaufman, professionally known as Murray the K, was an influential New York City disc jockey until the '70s.

He was my favorite DJ and during his heyday, Kaufman was dubbed ''The Fifth Beatle'' after helping to introduce the Fab Four to America and serving as master of ceremonies for their concerts at Carnegie Hall and Shea Stadium. He became program director and drive-time disc jockey on WOR-FM, 98.7, one of the first FM rock stations.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh4URmTx78w

According to Wikipedia, Murray played long album cuts rather than singles, often playing groups of songs by one artist, or thematically linked songs, uninterrupted by commercials. WOR-FM switched to the tighter Drake format where DJs weren't allowed to pick the music and talk as much, so Murray the K left New York radio to host programs in Toronto—on CHUM-AM and WHFS 102.3 FM in Washington D.C. in 1972.

He returned to New York to host NBC Monitor and as a fill-in morning DJ. In early 1975, he joined Long Island progressive rock station WLIR-FM, and his final New York radio show ran later that year on WKTU-FM.

MTK promoted the careers of the Rolling Stones, the Who, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Jimi Hendrix, the Animals, and others.

''What's happening, baby" he would yelp, and then let loose the sound of freight trains crashing, cavalry charging, jungle animals yowling, or a lone man screaming, the sound receding with horrifying verisimilitude as one imagined a body plunging over a cliff. Teen-Age Listening Cult. Also "Watching the submarine races" is an euphemism for making out (and more) in a car. It's the kind of thing a cop would say to be funny when he knocks on the fogged-up window of your Chevy parked in the park to ask what you're doing there at 1 am as if he doesn't know damn well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1fImXAeS-s

Kauffman called himself the fifth Beatle but someone else also claimed that nickname. George Martin was their producer and he was the one who knew the Fab Four best. I never met him personally, but had the pleasure of interviewing him from NYC to London.
