The great State of Texas confirms this year's first case of dangerous viruses now spreading around the nation and worldwide.
It's no secret that Texans like to brag. But the saying "everything is bigger in Texas" doesn't just refer to big hats, big hair, and big attitudes. It has its roots in the state's enormous geographical area. Texas has a total area of 268,820 square miles (696,241 km²), ranking just behind Alaska in terms of size.
However, this one is serious and spreading. 'People will develop severe illness' "It is important to know how to protect themselves." Texas officials have confirmed the state's first case of West Nile virus this year along with 10 cases of dengue fever amid a global surge of mosquito-borne illnesses, according to a statement from Texas Health and Human Services.
WEST NILE - A virus that spreads through mosquito bites. Most people infected with West Nile virus don’t have symptoms. About 1 in 5 people have symptoms like fever, rash and muscle aches. Rarely, West Nile can cause serious brain and spinal cord inflammation (encephalitis and meningitis)
DENGUE - A mosquito-borne viral disease occurring in tropical and subtropical areas.
Those who become infected with the virus a second time are at a significantly greater risk of developing severe disease.
Symptoms are high fever, rash, and muscle and joint pain. In severe cases there is serious bleeding and shock, which can be life threatening.
Treatment includes fluids and pain-relievers. Severe cases require hospital care.
