THE BEAT GOES ON

For decades, I have proudly served as a frontline journalist, then executive in charge of production, administration, and media strategy.

I’ve been blessed by working with thousands of highly talented professionals at Washington Post-Newsweek, NBC, Univision, Telemundo, USIA, Cablevision, AP, and Imaginus. My badge of honor shined through new and increasing challenges that resulted in promotions. I became the youngest Televisa executive, and the the first Latino to ascend through multiple media platforms as I led ratings growth and subsequent awards. Then I became the first AP NYC Television Bureau Chief and operations executive for North America.

Yesterday I heard from one of my many promoted manager-colleagues who has kept the same post for decades. Along the way, I have met, mentored, promoted, partnered, and supported too many media superstars to mention. They know who they are and should realize that I hold my deepest gratitude for allowing me to be a part of their great journey. I will always be grateful.

When I received a horse for my birthday from my grandparents as a kid, my parents wouldn’t let me out of the house to take ia ride until I sat down and wrote them a thank-you note. I recall grumbling at the time, but saying thank-you has become a passion of mine.

I want to say thanks and give a shout out to my family for their love and to my bosses who made the greatest impact on my career and most importantly my loving and late parents for insisting I develop as a bilingual professional and earn advanced degrees along the way. Wonderful parents and a fantastic family are crucial for development. My folks showed me what it is like to overcome obstacles and to work tirelessly to achieve goals..

With all the noise about DEI, all I will say is that qualification, hard work, and determination are the best keys to a great career. Quality managers embrace equality.

Effective leaders are thoughtful and courageous… they step forward even when others step back.

Great bosses rise above… they treat people with dignity, no matter the circumstance.

Inspirational supervisors give us reasons to keep pushing and to stay in the fight!

I am very fortunate to have had these leaders and hope all of you agree.

I'm working on the next chapter…
