Speaking from previous experiences I do not recommend driving this entire route because I have been there and it may be unsafe.
The World's Longest Road Stretches 19,000 Miles Across Two Continents. How to Drive It and make sure you have life insurance Here’s everything you need to know about the Pan-American Highway, the world’s longest road.
Driving The Pan-American Highway would take several months to well over a year to cover the entire distance. Besides poor road conditions, a particular 60-mile stretch of land between Panama and Colombia is treacherous and inhospitable, with dense jungle and swampy terrain.
Travelers can be vulnerable to kidnapping or other violence from guerrillas, drug traffickers, and smugglers. The area is also mostly left alone by the government, with few emergency services and non-existent cell phone reception. Most people bypass the Darién Gap by boat or plane. However The Pan-American Highway is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it’s certainly not for everyone. If you don’t enjoy time in the car, you’re better off flying from destination to destination. But if road trips are your thing, this could be a fantastic opportunity to join a network of like-minded people and experience continents' worth of new cultures.
Finally, find a good mechanic at least a week in advance of your road trip to have the oil and tire pressure checked and ensure that the battery, brakes, and engine are working properly. Then pray that everything goes your way along that long and winding road.
