So far, there is no evidence that the president has benefited financially from any of his son Hunter’s business dealings. Hunter Biden himself was indicted this week on gun charges. The special counsel in charge of the case says the younger Biden lied on a federal form that he had not been using drugs at the time of applying for the gun and for possession of that weapon.
There could be other tax charges coming soon, stemming from his business dealings. This points to the possibility that there could be a trial in a presidential election year when his father is running for reelection.
On the one hand, the charges, potential trial, and impeachment inquiry could serve to muddy the waters and give former President Trump a talking point against President Biden, as #MAGA allies of Trump’s on Capitol Hill are hoping.
But there’s also the possibility of a backlash against Republicans, too.
There certainly was in 1998 when impeachment against President Clinton seemed inevitable. Democrats won five seats in the House, which is unusual for a president’s party in a midterm year. Clinton’s approval rating actually jumped 9 points, all the way up to 73%, from before he was impeached to immediately after, according to Gallup.
