My perspective on accents, to be blunt about it, I worked to eliminate my Cuban accent after listening to Ricky Ricardo's Rhumba.

A lifetime later, It’s now refreshing to hear friends with accents from Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and The Bronx. Everyone should embrace their unique way of speaking. I think it’s all about clarity and confidence. For me, I wouldn’t change the tone and rhythm I use to respond.
I’ve noticed that when I engage in a conversation with someone, it’s easier to connect if my tone matches their vibe and keeps things flowing naturally. I feel like it helps make conversations more engaging and less robotic.
The goal in speaking perfect English even though it is not our native language is not to erase an accent; it’s to be clearly understood. And the same goes for you for every language. Our accent isn’t the problem. It reflects where you’re from, the languages you speak, and the experiences that have made you who you are. The real issue usually isn’t the accent itself, but things like unclear sounds, flat intonation, or speech patterns that make it harder for people to follow you. I have worked with plenty of students who have thought their accents were holding them back.
When we focus on certain sounds, rhythm, and stress, speech becomes clearer; without losing anything. People understood them effortlessly, and they spoke with more confidence than ever. Instead of chasing the idea of sounding native, focus on speaking in a way that’s clear, natural, and engaging. That’s what makes people listen.
What about you? Is there a specific sound, or accent that makes you feel best?
