THE MYTH OR THE MAN — OR BOTH — MELTING DOWN? A political warning light is flashing red.
Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33 percent, his lowest level of the current presidency, while 64 percent disapprove of his performance, according to a new #Reuters/Ipsos poll. Even more damaging: 80 Percent of Americans now expect U.S. involvement in Iran to drag on.
That matters because Trump built his political brand around strength, dealmaking and the promise that he could fix what Washington couldn’t.
But the Iran war is testing that mythology. The conflict is disrupting global oil supplies and pushing gasoline prices higher, adding fresh pressure to household budgets. Meanwhile, voters are increasingly skeptical about the economy, and, for the first time in a decade, #Reuters reports that Democrats now have an edge over Republicans on who can manage it better.
That could become a brutal political equation heading into the November midterms:
Higher gas prices + prolonged war + economic anxiety = a very different Trump story.
The question isn't simply whether Trump is losing popularity.
It's whether the Trump myth is beginning to collide with the Trump presidency.
Is the myth melting? The man? Or both?
