A NEWS FIX

Submitted by ub on

Altogether all three broadcast television networks are drawing less than ten percent of the total news audience. WHY?

Here are facts. CBS Evening News, anchored by Tony Dokoupil, posted week-to-week declines in both total viewers and the key adults 25–54 demographic, falling 7% and 8%, respectively, according to Nielsen data.

The drop contrasted with gains at rival broadcasts. ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s Nightly News both increased their audiences from the previous week, with ABC leading in overall viewership and growth in the 25–54 demographic.

Tony took over the anchor role, has faced criticism since his appointment. Some critics have accused CBS News leadership of seeking to curry favor with President Donald Trump, an allegation the network has not publicly addressed

Network news is not dead. it is undergoing a major, slow-motion decline as viewership shrinks and audiences age. While evening newscasts remain profitable and are still a top news source for many, they face severe competition from streaming, social media, and shifting habits, particularly among younger demographics.

Key insights regarding the state of network news:

  • Shrinking, Older Audience: Network news viewership is declining, with a significant portion of the audience being older viewers. Younger generations, such as Gen X, Y, and Z, are more likely to get their news from digital platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
  • Changing Consumption Habits: A 2025 survey showed that 62% of Americans who prefer to watch the news still prefer TV over other platforms, but the definition of "TV" is changing, with many moving to streaming services.
  • Economic Pressures: Network news has faced budget cuts, and revenue is under pressure, despite some ad revenue gains, with a significant portion of ads coming from pharmaceuticals.
  • The "Local" Alternative: Local television remains a strong, trusted source for, news and information.
  • Shift to Digital: Many networks are expanding their digital presence, with some, like Axios, growing their local operations.

Despite the decline, the major networks still hold a significant place in the media landscape, particularly for live, national events.
