America Roasts

Heat records in many American cities may be broken today as dangerous temperatures continue to scorch the lay of the land.

Roasting brings out the aroma and flavor that is locked inside the coffee bean, but when it comes to humans, the odor is totally different. A dangerous heatwave continues coast to coast across America. The highest flooding threat is over the Southern High Plains. An intense, prolonged, and record-breaking heatwave will continue over the Western USA throughout this week. High temperatures will soar to more than 30 degrees above normal in parts of Washington and Oregon. Meanwhile, a stalled front will bring considerable flash, urban, and small stream flooding impacts through mid-week across southeastern New Mexico and far western Texas.

This is expected to become the hottest day of the year with all-time record highs likely in many cities, according to forecasters. Many regions baked under triple-digit heat over the weekend, with Portland, Oregon having its hottest day ever by recording 110 degrees.

Above-average temperatures and oppressive heat will abound across the Northeast this week, while below-average temperatures continue across much of the Southern Rockies. Just south of Portland, Salem shattered its all-time heat record Sunday, reaching a sweltering 112 degrees.

This extended heat dome is a taste of the future as climate change reshapes weather patterns worldwide, according to scientists. #DONews has prepared for the heatwave in your area this week.
