A government of the people, by the people, for the people...
Authority comes from the citizens "of the people", is exercised through elected representatives "by the people", and serves the collective good and welfare of the populace "for the people". It means popular sovereignty, where the people are the ultimate source of power, control the government through voting and participation, and expect it to work only in their interest. Not one percent.

- "For the people": The government's purpose is to promote the general welfare, provide services (like schools, roads), and protect the rights and interests of all citizens, not just a few.
- It's the essence of democracy and popular sovereignty, ensuring government legitimacy and accountability to the governed. Lincoln used it to frame the Civil War as a fight to preserve this self-governance.
