Iran says it struck the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of attempting an illegal transit. The Associated Press says it could not immediately independently confirm the strike. Hundreds of thousands of people also rallied in Tehran in a government-organized demonstration.

President Donald Trump said the White House is barring CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access. Reuters reports the outlets are expected to challenge the move legally, while free-press advocates have raised First Amendment concerns. Trump also said other media organizations could face similar action.

Trump signed a sweeping Russia sanctions bill into law. The measure targets Russian officials, banks and energy infrastructure and gives the president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries importing Russian oil or gas under specified conditions. The Senate passed it 86-11 and the House 262-159.

Voting began Friday in Russia's three-day parliamentary election. Reuters reports the ruling United Russia party is widely expected to retain its dominant position, while the Kremlin has presented the election as a measure of support for President Vladimir Putin and his policies.
