APE MAN

Is there a BiG Mac or crazy ape in Washington fixing to destroy the federal government and long established institutions like The AP?

The Associated Press (AP) was founded in 1846, making it 177 years old. The AP is a news agency that operates as a cooperative and is headquartered in New York City.

The AP was the first private sector organization in the United States to operate on a national scale. The AP has covered many of history's most important events, including the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the death of Pope John Paul.

The AP is known for its AP Stylebook, its AP polls tracking NCAA sports, and its election polls and results during US elections. The AP has won 59 Pulitzer Prizes, including 36 for photography.

The AP is a not-for-profit news agency that produces news reports that are distributed to its members, major U.S. daily newspapers, and radio and television broadcasters.

Celebrating 90 years of innovation in photojournalism

The Associated Press has always been at the forefront of photojournalism, capturing the moments that shape our world and connecting audiences with history as it unfolds. This year, we celebrate 90 years of AP Wirephoto, the technology that transmitted photos from 1935, bringing unforgettable images of pivotal cultural moments, historical milestones, and groundbreaking innovations to millions worldwide at near instantaneous speed.

The Associated Press issued this statement on Tuesday from Executive Editor Julie Pace:

As a global news organization, The Associated Press informs billions of people around the world every day with factual, nonpartisan journalism.

Today we were informed by the White House that if AP did not align its editorial standards with President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, AP would be barred from accessing an event in the Oval Office. This afternoon AP’s reporter was blocked from attending an executive order signing.

It is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism. Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP’s speech not only severely impedes the public’s access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment.

AP’s guidance on the Gulf of Mexico and Trump’s executive order regarding the name is available here.
