ATTACKS TO REMEMBER

Submitted by ub on

Since history can have a way of repeating itself unless there are lessons learned, are we destined to allow grave mistakes to continue?

I didn't witness 12/7/1941 but I studied it and learned tots. I was working for The Associated Press in NYC on 9/11/2001 and became horrified by airline hijackings and suicide attacks carried out by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda against targets in the United States, This was the deadliest terrorist acts on American soil in USA history.

The attacks against New York City and Washington, D.C., caused extensive death and destruction and triggered an enormous U.S. effort to combat terrorism. Some 2,750 people were killed in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania; all 19 terrorists died. Police and fire departments in New York were especially hard-hit: hundreds had rushed to the scene of the attacks, and more than 400 police officers and firefighters were killed.

Most recently, I am alarmed by the 1/6/2021 attack on the US Capitol. This act of sedition and subversion of the US Constitution and the mob's insurrection against American established authority aimed at violence against our laws.

Let us all keep in mind that forgetting is the most dangerous act. Always remember facts, especially as autocrats are on the rise and democracies that foster equality, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are increasingly threatened. We are witnessing a concerted attempt to destabilize our constitution and the American democracy.

The troubling thing is the lack of preparedness and that anyone was surprised. #TwiceImpeached #LoserLiar #LameDuckDonald claimed the election was stolen and wheeled out conspiracy theories to foment the deadly riot insurrection.

Reject those who ignore the peril posed by anyone who fails to grasp the most tragic lessons of history or distort what is known about the past. Is the GOP a fascistcriminal, sociopathic, anti-democratic, white supremacist, theocratic, plutocratic cultlike organization? Have members and followers repeatedly shown their true colors to the world?

These elected officials and supporters haven’t learned the lessons of our past struggles. When anyone claims there are "very fine people" among White supremacists or fails to condemn like-minded Groups who commit violent acts they have failed to learn the lessons of a tragic past.
