At this hour, a spectacular City Island Avenue car crash (for island standards) is being investigated by FDNY and NYPD on the scene.

City Island in the Bronx has a New England-type culture that makes it seem much different from other parts of New York City. A native City Islander has been called a “clam digger” (or “clamdigger") since the early 1900s. A non-native City Islander is called a “mussel sucker.”

While on the subject, some old folks who are still driving and live in independent living facilities drive like manics, so be careful out there everyone, including mussel suckers and clam diggers alike. the distinction between a “mussel sucker” and a “clam digger”: a mussel sucker is someone from elsewhere who has come to love City Island, whereas a clam digger is someone who was born on the island and loves it.

Clamdiggers can folks wearing long, slim shorts that end right on, or just below, the knee. Some retailers use terms like pedal pushers, capris, and clamdiggers interchangeably, while others describe clamdiggers as shorter. Clamdiggers are sleeker and narrower than Bermuda shorts.
