Drummer Boy

Submitted by ub on

The sixty-something-year-old who lives in my building thinks he is a real drummer because he likes to bang with his drumsticks.

Never mind that he does this at night while most normal folks sleep, but he can't even keep a beat. Therefore he is more like a dumber boy.

What makes a great drummer? There are many metrics to consider, but there are various rankings in no particular order based on technical skill, creativity/innovation, compositional ability, and attitude.

My favorites are Art Blakey, Mongo Santamaria, and Max Weinberg because I had the opportunity to meet and get to know all of them

http://artblakey.com/ - The official Art Blakey website is owned and operated by the Estate of Art Blakey. This site provides accurate biographical information on Art Blakey’s background, accomplishments, and contributions to jazz music.

https://nmaahc.si.edu/latinx/mongo-santamaria - Ramón " Mongo " Santamaría Rodríguez (April 7, 1917 – February 1, 2003) was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s.

maxweinberg.com - ON DRUMS Max "the Mighty MaxWeinberg, who is an American drummer and television personality, most widely known as the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and as the bandleader for Conan O'Brien on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. He is the father of Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg. @EStreetMax

Here is a list of the greatest people to ever hit the skins and note that drummer boy is not even the last one on this list.
