Earthstock 2013, Stony Brook University’s annual weeklong celebration of Earth Day, culminates with a day of free activities featuring an exciting lineup of musical acts and entertainment as well as food, refreshments and educational booths and displays.
Earthstock 2013 officially kicks off on Monday, April 15, with a series of lectures and workshops, a Sustainability Studies career panel and more. Wallace S. Broecker, Newberry Professor of Geology, Columbia University and Lamont-Doherty earth Observatory, will serve as the keynote speaker in a lecture entitled, “The Co2 Emergency: What Can We Do About It?” taking place in the Charles B. Culminating the week is the Earthstock Festival on Friday, April 19 at 10 am on the Academic Mall in the heart of the Stony Brook University campus. More than 100 campus and off-campus environmental organizations will participate in the daylong festivities, which includes a Farmer’s Market and vendors displaying a variety of green and organic products, an ice cream social, an eco-scavenger hunt and more. Festivalgoers will have an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the environment by reciting the “Green Pledge,” a commitment to be eco-friendly and reduce their carbon footprint.
Performers include the Stony Brook Marching Band, Andean Flutists, Native American Dancers and the acoustic sounds of Jack’s Waterfall, which will be broadcast live on WUSB 90.1 FM. The Earthstock Festival would not be complete without the famous red rubber duck races down “stony brook.”
