Fill Up the Food Banks" food drive is underway! In observance of Mother Teresa’s 103rd birthday, Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj is asking area residents to bring donations of nonperishable food (pasta, sauce, soup, canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, etc.) to the corner of Lydig and Holland Avenues, beneath the street sign reading “Mother Teresa Way,” at 11 AM on Monday, August 26. We will be there, along with volunteers, to collect the food and deliver the donations to the Jewish Community Council of Pelham Parkway food pantry.
If you are not available for the drop-off on the 26th, you can also drop off food at Jimmy Vacca's office, 3040 East Tremont Avenue, prior to August 23rd; Monday through Friday between 12 PM and 3 PM. Food donations will also be accepted at Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj’s office located at 1126 Pelham Parkway South. You may also make donations to one of the following area food pantries in honor of Mother Teresa: St. Lucy’s Church (833 Mace Avenue), Our Lady of Solace Church (731 Morris Park Avenue), St. Clare’s Church (1918 Paulding Avenue), St. Benedict’s Church (2969 Otis Avenue), Jewish Community Council of Pelham Parkway (2157 Holland Avenue).
The food drive has become a very successful tradition which started three years ago in honor of Mother Teresa’s 100th birthday. Residents interested in volunteering to collect and deliver food can call my office at (718) 931-1721.
