Twenty NYC fire companies, including three in The Bronx, have been saved from proposed cuts citywide.
Mayor Bloomberg's budget proposal for 2012 included these fire companies, which were slated for closing.
Among these saved companies is our very own ladder #53 company right here on City Island.
City Councilman James Vacca (D-District 13) praised the mayor's decision, saying that closing the ladder company in City Island would have increased response time by at least 10 minutes. Recently, hundreds of City Islanders and politicians from across the borough attended a Town Hall Meeting to feverishly support keeping the fire company open.
