February 29 is Leap Day. No, don’t start jumping just yet, this has nothing to do with frogs or ballet. It has to do with catching up to the Gregorian calendar and the rotation of the sun.

According to the Gregorian calendar which is the most widely used civil calendar in the world, and it's a day that takes place mostly during years that are divisible by four.

So, years including 2004, 2008, and 2012 were leaping years, and this year, we're celebrating leap day again.

The Earth takes a total of 365 days, five hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds to revolve once around the sun.

The Gregorian calendar only contains 365 days, so we add an “extra day” about once every four years so that we don’t lose six hours every year.

Julius Caesar introduced the first calendar leap year in 46 B.C. There was a slight flaw in his calculations, which Pope Gregory XIII tweaked in his Gregorian calendar more than 1,500 years later.

Among the benefits of Leap Day are that women can propose to a man. According to an old Irish legend, St. Brigit once complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their men to propose.

So the two of them struck a deal, where women were allowed to propose to men on one day every four years. And in some cultures, turning down a woman’s proposal on leap day has serious consequences,
