Kiss Your Asylum Goodbye?

Submitted by ub on

Asylum comes from an Ancient Greek juridical concept, under which a person persecuted by their own country may be protected by another sovereign authority, such as another nation or church official, who in medieval times could offer sanctuary.

This was recognized by the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Hebrews then adopted into Western tradition. René Descartes fled to the Netherlands, Voltaire to England, and Thomas Hobbes to France, because each state offered protection to persecuted foreigners.

As Americans prepare to celebrate July 4 and the freedoms we enjoy in our democracy, some are wrongfully being held for doing what many others have done for generations. A federal judge has ruled that #Trump is wrongly detaining asylum seekers by making blanket detention decisions, contrary to the 2009 directive.

Over the past, The US Department of Homeland Security has allowed over 90 percent of all asylum-seekers who proved a credible fear of returning to their home country to be released in the #USA to await their final hearing before an immigration judge.

Since POTUS took office, those rates have dropped to 8 percent in Los Angeles, 2 percent in Detroit, and 0 percent in El Paso, Philadelphia, and Newark.

Homeland Security officials must stop evaluate cases on an individual basis, according to federal trial judge in Washington, DC. More than 1,000 asylum seekers must immediately be released or given a hearing https://usat.ly/2KGjvtL
