May is Bike Month in NYC and it is the perfect time to take advantage of New York City's extensive system of cycling and walking trails, or you may wish to ride your bike around town, like we see Ms. Whitcombe doing. She is a very proud clam-digger and is about to become a local City Island businesswoman and entrepreneur. Digital image provided by mussel-sucker/photojournalist: Larry Christen
Currently NYC Parks has built over 100 landscaped miles of its proposed 50-mile green-way system. Green ways answer the growing public demand for safe and pleasant ways to travel about the city. These trails crisscross the city’s five boroughs and allow New Yorkers to get to work or school, shop or do errands, or to reach the waterfront, parks, beaches, and museums.
Plan your trips with cycling and walking-related maps. The collection includes the New York Cycling Map, covering all five boroughs, the Brooklyn-Queens Green-way Guide, and the Manhattan Waterfront Green way Map and Brochure. Also check out the interactive Parks Locator with green way paths marked by a dashed blue line.
Learn to Ride is a program for children age 5 and over. Bring your child, a bike, and a helmet for this free, fun event! Using this "balance first" method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don't, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.
Be sure to study up on the emergence of bicycles in New York City parks before taking to green-ways!
