This morning, I got on my bicycle to go for a short ride around City Island. I decided to stop by and visit the oldest, coolest, most wonderful, and the wisest may I know. His name is Ed Sadler and he is a 95 year old retired fire-boat Captain. Ed and I have shared many delightful visits and he has even visited my home, in the same building where he attended classes as a young boy. We have enjoyed several lively conversations over time, but one of my favorites is the story of when he met and fell in love with a bright, young and beautiful woman named Laura, who also happened to bake the most delicious lemon meringue pie he'd ever tasted.
Ed says he was visiting friends and was offered a slice of lemon meringue pie, and after tasting it he said "I would marry the woman who baked this delicious pie". He soon found out who the chef was. They were introduced and as they say - The rest is history.
Ed tells me that he asked Laura to marry him on Valentines Day. They had 4 beautiful children, three survived. One daughter died years ago. Many years later, his wife also passed away right after Valentines day.
When I arrived at Ed's door today, his only surviving daughter, Jean told me her father was still upstairs. Laying down inside the same room in the very same house he was born in 95 years earlier. He later told me over the telephone that the is having trouble staying on his feet.
His daughter told me that Ed is not feeling well and also said his health was deteriorating. She added that he would not be attending tonight's CICA meeting, which he normally attends every last Tuesday evening of the month.
