On the CW Post campus of Long Island University, an early morning accident left one LIU faculty member wounded in the leg during a discharge of his weapon. The adjunct instructor was hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury. The professor has been identified as 72 year old John Carney, from the College of Management. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
Although this was an isolated incident that local police and the university are investigating, it took a day for the university to make an announcement to the academic community. LIU officials stress that once the accident occured, trained counselors were mobilized to assist any students who needed support.
LIU says it is committed to the safety and security on campus and points out that state law prohibits the carrying of firearms unless prior written consent from Public Safety has been obtained. C.W. Post policy prohibits the possession of firearms or other dangerous weapons on campus. www.liu.edu
